Plant NOx reduction program.

The challenge

Our team is operating a complex steam supply system on site, which is energized from different steam boilers in various capacities. Due to environmental protection requirements, a project to refurbish a boiler was engineered and implemented.

The solution

Technical main scope was the replacement of the existing combined burners (natural gas and heavy fuel oil) with two low NOx, thus high efficiency burners. In the project scope, a new vessel control system and the replacement of feed-water pumps were also included. The project included the following:

  • Detail-engineering of mechanical installation and electrical instrumentation including execution of hazard analyses (HAZOP) as well as implementation & programming of the process control system (PCS)
  • Full permit & approval from local Authorities
  • Qualification activities related to international standards (project quality management program)

Value delivered

Achievement of 20% reduction of NOx emission levels at project completion (saving 5 tons per year). In addition, overall efficiency was increased by installing frequency driven pumps for feed-water system.
